Watch & Learn Self-Directed Lessons are All Around You
Self-directed investors often come to SDI Society looking for answers. They hear so many conflicting opinions about how they can and cannot invest their retirement capital presented as statements of fact that the entire process can be overwhelming.
As Bryan Ellis, founder of SDI Society and president of KLT Group often says, "The brutal truth about self-directed retirement accounts is that there are way too many people out there who think they will get rich just because they can buy alternative assets instead of stocks. The truth is if you are serious about building wealth in a self-directed IRA or solo 401(k), you need to be very systematic with how you set up, structure, and protect your retirement portfolio. The solution is to not just educate yourself on how to do this, but to evaluate your sources of education as carefully as you would do due diligence on any project or opportunity requiring your capital."
While you must research the people from whom you get information and advice about your self-directed retirement strategies very carefully, one of the things that is most enjoyable about self-directed retirement investing is the wealth of strategic options all around you. Do not fall prey to the trap of assuming most of the creative, flexible, unconventional, and highly profitable tactics out there must be prohibited for you. In most cases, they are not!
Watching and learning from other investors, whether they self-direct their own retirement accounts or not, can be one of the best ways to identify your next avenue toward amazing, extreme, or just "plain old reliable" returns. Never be unwilling to watch and learn from the other investors around you, whether their situation is identical to yours or not.
The Self-Directed Investor magazine Case Studies section is designed to not only spark your curiously but to also inspire your own creative thinking. When you see other investors planning and taking action to secure their retirement, you should be evaluating their every move to take away the best information and lessons for your own unique situation. Will every case study be a perfect fit for you? Of course not! That is not how self-directed retirement works. That is not even how investors more generally work, as you likely know well.
What every case study should be for you is an opportunity to learn, to consider, and to explore. When something does attract your interest, work with your professional advisors to make sure that the strategy will work for you and your specific retirement accounts because not everyone has the same goals or the same infrastructure. The important thing is to always watch and learn from the environment around you. This section of the magazine is designed to be a cross section of the retirement investing environment.
